Year:
2013
Quarter:
October - December
Communications activities:

One game warden of the Nature Conservation Division(NCD) was trained in camera trapping by the terrestrial vertebrates protocol scientist. This was done after a meeting between the head of the NCD and TEAM's site manager to discuss a more active collaboration between TEAM and NCD.

Unusual Events at the TEAM Site:

There were no unusual events at the TEAM site.

New Species:

No new species found.

Protocol Activities:

Climate protocol was carried out, but some problems with the battery were detected after checking the climate station and the data. It became clear that the battery had to be replaced.

Vegetation protocol was carrried out in the period Nov 8th- Dec 7th 2013 by the Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname (CELOS). CELOS was contracted to do the vegetation protocol this year after the vegetation protocol was not carried out in 2012, because there was no vegetation protocol scientist available. During the period Nov 8th - Dec17th 2013 four plots (P1,P2,P3,P5) were visited and had the census done following the vegetation protocol.  Plot 4 and 6 have still be to set up and measured. This will take place from February 16 - 28th 2014.

During the period of Nov 8-22th 30 camera traps were deployed in Array 1 following the terrestrial vertebrates protocol.

Protocol Problems:

Climate protocol: Climate station was not working properly, because of battery failure. Further the climate station could not be updated with the required software and extra sensor yet, because of a software problem on the computer in the field and the battery failure.

Further the field trip for picking up camera traps from array 1 could not take place in December, which delayed the terrestrial vertebrates protocol with another month.

Schedule Problems:

There were significant deviations from the proposed sampling schedule for the terrestrial vertebrates and vegetation protocol, because of a number of reasons, such as:

1. Delay in fnalizing grant between CI-HQ and CI-Suriname.

2. Issues with resource planning (personnel) within CI-Suriname.

Logistical Problems:

During the period November - December 2013, there were some logistical problems in the field, because one of TEAM's field technicians had to leave the field, because of the death of his one-year old son. This caused problems in the field, because he also acts as the boatsman locally. This meant that 3-4 working days were lost in the search for a temporary boatsman.
