Year:
2009
Quarter:
October - December
Communications activities:
ITFC directors (Douglas Sheil and Miriam van Heist) and Badru Mugerwa have held meetings with Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) officials. UWA officials include Mr. Charles Tumwesigye (Bwindi- Mgahinga Conservation Area (BMCA) chief manager) and Mr. Edwin Kagoda (warden Research and Monitoring BINP). Badru Mugerwa has also held several meetings with local leaders in areas where TEAM activities are being implemented. The meetings were geared towards smooth implementation of TEAM activities in Bwindi. Two UWA rangers Jimmy Byaruhanga and Job Nahabwe were selected to participate on all TEAM activities. Jimmy and Job have participated in the vegetation plot survey, establishment and census. Job has participated in several ITFC/UWA studies. These include vegetation mapping, multiple use zones monitoring and installing camera traps. Both Job and Jimmy are very enthusiastic to participate in all TEAM activities.
Unusual Events at the TEAM Site:
Mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) for Bitukurwa tourism group were observed feeding in the plot. This occurred during the census for plot VGBIF5.
New Species:
No new species have been found and identified in BIF. Sampling for terrestrial vertebrates has not started in BIF. Vegetation plot census is not yet complete.
Protocol Problems:
Vegetation protocol
  • Shortage of equipment (and delayed shipping). Newly bought ITFC equipment (tape measures, sunto compass and sunto clinometer) were used in the vegetation plot survey and establishment. Equipment for plot census was recieved on 10th/12/2009.
  • Heavy rains in the month of December, which is supposed to be a dry season.
Climate monitoring protocol
  • Shortage of equipment (and delayed shipping). We are still waiting for the shipment.
Schedule Problems:
Vegetation protocol The pre- census measurement error estimation for diameter takers was completed. Two people, Jimmy Byaruhanga (UWA ranger) and Marius Tumugahiwe (ITFC field assistant) were selected as TEAM diameter takers. This was after they had met the TEAM VG protocol required range of measurement errors. One plot (VGBIF 5) has been partially measured and assessed. We were unable to census two plots as scheduled. This was due to delayed shipment of equipment, and heavy rains in the month of December (which is supposed to be dry season). Climate monitoring protocol No monthly climate data is being collected. This is attributed to the delay in the shipment of equipment to the site. This was communicated to Tim. Climate data collection was scheduled to start in October. Climate station (tower and fencing) has been put in place. Climate data collection to start as soon as sensors have been received.
Logistical Problems:
No logistical problems were encountered at the site.
